Well, it took a while but I gave into the hype. I jump on the bandwagon and bought the Tarte Shape Tape Contour Concealer, but was it worth all the hype?
I promise you that about 99% of all beauty gurus on blog and YouTube love this Concealer. I mean, it’s got to be really good if it was sold out on Ultra and even on the Tarte website and everyone raves about it, right? I finally got my hands on it. I truly hate purchasing things online when im in such two minds about a product, but I figured maybe i would also get into the hype, and see that maybe, just maybe this bad boy was worth it.
Tarte has 14 different shades of the concealer and they retail for $27 (R320.44)a piece on there online store. There’s a 99% chance the color you want won’t be in stock. They go FAST. I got mine on the Tarte website because the Ultra website was sold out of my shade (go figure). So now lets get into the important things and see how this concealer holds up to the others that I have been using lately.

The Concealer comes in a tube with a wand-style doefoot applicator. I like the packaging for this product. It’s larger than your average concealer – and when I say larger I mean it’s shorter, but wider – and the wand applicator is huge. It feels heavy duty and luxurious which I would hoped for in a $27 concealer. The beauty gurus say that this concealer is hey full coverage, but it wasn’t like that for me. I would say that this concealer is light to medium coverage, I had to apply my MAC studio fix concealer before I applied the Shape tape to my under eyes and blemishes. I tried laying it to see maybe I would get the full coverage that I wanted but found that it just made the concealer look too much and cakey. It does blend out extremely well, but it does loose the little pigmentation that it has.

I’ve heard beauty gurus and influences talk about how awesome this product is at not creasing underneath the eyes and settling into fine lines. Not sure if they just didn’t have any fine lines for the product to crease in, but it definitely creases on me. I definitely had higher hopes for this product!
I have found that if I use my ring finger to pat around my under eye before applying powder, this helps. I remove all of the creasing before applying any powder, and then I apply a light layer with a flat powder brush (I used the Kryolan Dermacolor waterproof setting powder). I’ve noticed that the creasing is actually worse when I bake right away. After the under eyes are lightly set, I can then go in and bake (I usually use the Kryolan Translucent Powder in Shade T1). The creasing doesn’t go away completely , but its dramatically reduced. If you have fine lines, it will definitely crease on you if you don’t set it with a powder.

It’s thick, so beware. Definitely didn’t budge on me, though which was great. It stayed on the whole day and part of the night and didn’t fade off like some concealer and foundations do. It looked a bit cakey after about 10-hours of wear, that’s pretty normal for concealers that I set with powder. I did also want to warn those of you with sensitives noses, this product does have a mild/medium floral scent. It doesn’t bother me too much because I’m not as sensitive to smell, but it’s one of those where you can definitely tell it’s there, but it goes away once it’s blended in and topped with powder.

Now the REAL questions is… is it worth the hype? My answer is, Yes and no. It’s a good concealer if you like the medium coverage. And on the bright side it will set well and last long. There are so many pros and cons to this concealer that I have no idea how to rate it and I know I might Kick myself later for giving it this rating but hey its how I feel about it. The rest is up to you.
I give the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer a reluctant 5 out of 10
