Huda Beauty Liquid Mattes and Lip Contours

I’ve started this blog post about 3 times now, trying to find the correct way in telling you about the Huda Beauty Lip collection, but all I ended up saying was “it’s great you should try it”. I love lipstick, matte lipstick, I can’t deny it. In my last post I mentioned I own 60 lipsticks and 60 lip liners, which seemed like madness to some people, but I’m a proud lipstick addict. I wear lipsticks at all times, even if I don’t wear any foundation my lipstick will be on my lips. Due to this colourful addiction I decided to do add to this post the course of this addiction.

It all started when I managed to get my hands on the Huda Beauty lip contours. As an old school makeup artist I find that the lips tend to look better and more polished with a liner. So it’s no wonder I fell in love with the lip contours. Because these products where released a while back I wanted to do some research as to what other bloggers felt about the lip contours, and to my amazement it was a mixed response. Some loved it some didn’t, I guess it’s just personal choices. I currently have all the original shades of lip contours (the first 9 shades that were released), I believe now Huda Beauty has come out with new shades of lip contours to match the shades in her lipstick collection that didn’t have matching lip contours which I must admit is super exciting.

When I first got the Lip contours I got all the shades and thought I’d try them out, one shade a day was my idea. But I ended up sticking to 4 out of 9 shades (Trendsetter, Bombshell, Trophy wife, Gossip gurl). I finally decided to try the rest a few days ago and thought that I was so silly for not trying them all. The main thing for me is the pigment of the product, and I found that the lip contours pigment were superb. The Huda Beauty lip contour is a sleek wooden pencil in black which comes packaged in a black cardboard box. The look and feel of the product is definitely good. The plastic cap fits snug and doesn’t come off easily. The ends of the liner as well as the box are colour coded corresponding to the product shade. So, it was easy to identify in my make up case. The labelling of the lip contour holds the Huda Beauty logo, the word Beauty in the logo is a dark metallic pink colour, underneath the logo is the words “lip contour” and underneath that is the name of the product (e.g., Vixen, video star etc).

The lip contours are quite smooth and creamy and is wonderfully pigmented. The liner tends to glide on easily and it doesn’t tug, pull or drag on the lips. The down side is that the tip got used up rather fast when I contoured and filled my lips in, so you have to have a sharpener nearby, a regular sharpener would work well. The Lip contours were released long before anyone knew that Huda Beauty was going release the Liquid mattes. So this served as a product on its own. Before the days of the liquid mattes, the Lip contour severed as matte lipstick. Now with the lipsticks it serves as a liner. Like any matte lip product this too needs prepared and exfoliated lips. If not, it will grab onto any texture on the lips and emphasise it. Once on I’ve felt a slight tightening effect which is common for most matte products,  the pigmentation is excellent; it covers all my lip pigmentation very well and provided an even base. My natural lip colour did not peep through and did not alter the shade of the lip contour.

As much as I love the Huda Beauty brand, I find myself abit disappointed with the long lasting wear. I have read numerous blog posts, and seen Huda Kattan herself on YouTube stating that the formula of the lip contour gives at least 8hours. But if you lip licker or munch frequently then this product isn’t an 8 hour wear. I had noticed after I had some soup, that the pigment transferred to the spoon. Imagine my disappointment. On the Huda Beauty website it says that is transfer proof and water proof. It could be that I’m doing something wrong but the lip contour is definitely not transfer proof. However it is water proof.

Once the liquid mattes were released I managed to get one in each of the 16 shades. Being a lipstick addict, I had high standards for the Liquid Mattes, and I was not disappointed. The design of the packaging is my favourite; the lipsticks are packed in a box with the design of Huda’s lips, at a glance it looks like the lips are holding the lipstick tube. This is a transparent cover with the Huda logo and social media tags on the side, this holds the tube in place. The liquid itself is packed in a frosted square shaped tube with a black lid, since the bottle is frosted, it doesn’t completely show the full lip shade.

The formula is almost surprisingly wet and runnier than other matte lipsticks that I have played with, but this is actually a blessing. Because the formula takes longer to dry, I had more time to work with the colour and shape my lips. After about 60 seconds, the liquid sets but is slightly tacky to the touch. This is also a bonus. My lips never felt dehydrated or crusty. I would suggest though keeping the application to 2 coats, more the 3 the outer corners of your lips start to feel abit heavy. The long wear quality of the formula isn’t so impressive — I ate, drank, and even slept in these lipsticks unsuccessfully with some flaking and dissolution. However, in the areas where the colour faded, it did so evenly, and not in large patches. I’m not a huge fan of the scent of the Huda Beauty liquid matte; it was a scent of vanilla extract mixed with chemical in the tube. Not exactly my favourite sent in a lipstick after the Kylie lip kit was launched.

But by far, the best part of the Liquid Matte launch is the colour options. The selection leans heavily towards ’90s pinks, browns, and vampy hues, with the exception of a few vibrant reds and pinks. While Huda lists the milky chocolate shade “Flirt” and cool red “Heartbreaker” as her favourites, I love the “Trophy wife” shade.

In closing, I honestly feel that I would wear Huda Beauty lip contours and liquid mattes more as an everyday lip product rather than for a formal occasion. And I look forward to any new products have Huda Beauty has to offer.

I give the Huda Beauty Lip Collection 7 lipsticks out of 10
