The Met Gala 2018

On the 7th of May 2018, fashionista’s around the world turned to there television and to social media to see the array of beauty, grace and breathtaking garments at the Met Gala 2018. For those select few who don’t know what the met gala is, let me take a moment to enlighten you,  The Costume Institute Gala, is an annual fundraising event, for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s in the big apple, New York City. It marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. Each year the event celebrates a specific theme, and the exhibition sets the tone for the formal dress of the night, since guests are expected to choose their fashion to match the theme of the exhibit. Each year, celebrities are chosen to serve as the event’s honorary chairs. Founded by publicist Eleanor Lambert, the benefit was first held in 1948 to encourage donations from New York’s high society. In modern day, the most famous faces from the realms of fashion, film, music and art come together to raise money for the Met’s Costume Institute and celebrate the grand opening of its latest exhibition.

Anna Wintour, Vogue editor-in-chief has been a chair of the event since 1995 (excluding 1996 and 1998). Anna Wintour oversees both the benefit committee and the guest list, with Vogue staffers helping assemble the list of the prestige invitees. According to Cathy Horyn of The New York Times, the gathering rivals the Los Angeles Vanity Fair Oscar Party, which is said to have more “star power” but less fashion panache. The annual guest list includes only 650–700 people making this event super exclusive, only the who’s who of the fashion world and Manhattan’s elite attend this Gala.

This year’s exhibition theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” . US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, enlists public figures to serve as the event’s co-chairs. The past hosts have included Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Marc Jacobs. This years Met Gala 2018, which marked the event’s 70th anniversary, was co-chaired by the sophisticated Amal Clooney,  the beautiful Rihanna and super talented Donatella Versace.

So you must be wondering what exactly is the theme this year, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination featured some 40 Vatican vestments and accessories spanning 15 papacies, which curator Andrew Bolton is said to have visited at least 10 times to secure pieces which have never left the Vatican’s possession before. Items such as Pope Benedict XV’s white silk cape embroidered with gold thread and the pointed bishop’s hat of Pope Leo XIII, will go on display alongside pieces by Coco Chanel, who was educated by nuns, John Galliano, Cristóbal Balenciaga and Donatella Versace, who is a sponsor of the exhibition. This years theme is Met’s most controversial yet, owing to the positioning of these fashion garments alongside sacred artefacts.

Now I know you didn’t quite expect a full history of the Met Gala, but in order to understand the beauty of the garments, you had to understand what it is all for. So without further adieu we will now discuss the top 5 of the beautiful garments seen at last night at the Met Gala 2018. I will showing you g

First Up we HAVE to talk about the Co-chair RiRi, who blessed the proceedings in an extremely papal hat, which coordinates with her intricately embellished mini dress and matching shawl-collar coat (all Maison Margiela Artisanal); the shoes were Christian Louboutin heels, a custom Judith Leiber clutch and jewelry by Cartier, Gilan and Narcisa Pheres.

Next up the queen of the red carpet, Blake Lively, who in my opinion stole the show wearing a gold-and-ruby brocade and beaded Atelier Versace gown with major attached skirt, Lorraine Schwartz jewelry (including a custom headpiece with 100 diamonds by the designer) and custom Christian Louboutin heels. This girl slayed the Met Gala!

Next up on my list of best dress Kim Kardashian West, who wore a curve-hugging golden sequin Atelier Versace gown with crosses beaded into the material and diamond cross necklaces by Lorraine Schwartz. The dress isn’t the only thing that she slayed, as jealous as I am about it, her makeup slayed the game! That arabian goddess smokey eye gave me envy for days.

Forth on my list is Jenny from the block aka Jennifer Lopez, who wore very on-theme beaded and feathered Balmain with Tiffany & Co. jewelry and Jimmy Choo accessories.
